Sibling love

When I was pregnant with my daughter I was a bit apprehensive about how my son would respond to her. He had been an only child for 7 years, would he be jealous that somebody would come and share his space? How would he react to her taking up so much of my time and me not being available for him as much as I used to. Would the age difference come in the way of them being playmates when she’s older?

She’s 9 months now and I think I was worried for nothing. My son absolutely dotes on his sister. He says that she’s the cutest baby in the universe and he’s the luckiest brother. Every time we want him to get off the iPad we tell him to play with his baby sister. My daughter seems destined not to be a girly girl. She loves playing with her brother’s toys even the creepy ones.

I guess I have nothing to worry about and can look forward to seeing this brother-sister relationship blossom in the future.

The Strength of Family

I’ve had good friends throughout my life but they’ve come and gone. I’m still in touch with many of my school friends but they’re living their own lives so far away. All this time the person I’ve been closest to is my sister.

By coincidence when I moved to Dubai she had moved here as well just a month earlier. We live only 15 minutes away from each other. Before that we were both living in the same city where we had spent all of our childhood. We’ve been together all of our lives.

I saw my sister who is a doctor look after my father when he was dying of cancer. I learnt from her that no matter how many friends you have it is family you can depend on in times of need. Family is the most important thing you can have.  You don’t choose your family but they are a blessing that God bestows upon you.

In every crisis we have faced I have seen my family come together. After my parents I know I can depend on my siblings if ever I need them. For the same reason I panic at the thought that my son is an only child. Who will he turn to when his parents are no longer around?

Just the other day when I was driving my son to school he said, “Dear God please give Mama a baby”. I was very surprised that he said that but at the same time I repeated in my head “Dear God, please listen to him.” I hope my son gets to experience the joys of having siblings and never has to feel alone in this world.

Out of Reach

When I was a child the 4 year and 5 year difference I had with my elder sister and brother seemed really too much. They were always out of my reach.

I used to follow my brother around and copy everything he did. He used to cycle so I learnt cycling too even though I remember grazing my knees and elbows quite badly attempting to learn but I did it in the end. He would skate around the house so I had to learn too. Sometimes he would make me his orderly (a senior army officer’s assistant) and I would do his chores.

I would want to play with my sister and her friends but I was a baby for them and they didn’t want to have me around. When her friends were not around she would dress me up as a bride and put on make-up on me. I think I rather enjoyed it as I never complained.

What I longed for was to be treated as an equal. I soon learnt that this was not going to be possible and it was better just to stick with my friends.

When we became adults everything changed. Now I always go to my sister for advice and am close to both my siblings. They treat me as an equal and I don’t feel the age difference at all. Sometimes they ask me for advice or help too. I’m glad they are no longer out of my reach.
