Be Nice

Once upon a time long ago before I was married I had gone to the market with my sister and mother for some shopping. We used to live just across the market and all we had to do was to cross the road and there we were. So one day we were on one of our frequent jaunts when I spotted a boy walking barefoot. I went up to him and told him to come with me. I took him to a shoe shop and told him to check his size. The salesman and the boy were both looking at me as if I was mad. After some insistence on my part he tried on the shoes and when he was happy with a pair I paid for them. The boy quickly ran off without saying a word. The salesman then turned to me and said

“It’s no use Miss, he’ll sell the shoes to buy food and tomorrow you’ll see him barefoot again.”

“OK Mr Wise Guy” I thought to myself and didn’t say because I was still in that Be Nice mode.

“Let’s just give him a chance. At least he won’t be barefoot for a day in this cold.”

Repeated Kindness

Tell us about the time when you performed a secret random act of kindness — where the recipient of your kindness never found out about your good deed. How did the deed go down?

A random act is something lacking regularity and kindness should be done often, not rarely.

My husband and I both have made lifelong pledges that we would donate 1/10^th of everything we earn to a charity fund. Through this fund schools and hospitals are built, widows and orphans are given shelter and aid is provided to victims of natural disasters. We made this pledge more than 10 years ago (in my husband’s case more than 13 years ago) and continue to live up to it.

Of course those that benefit from it do not know that we contribute to the fund. Acts of kindness made in secret are better than those done openly but there is no harm in telling others about it should they be inspired to follow suit.

I often pray that when my son grows up he helps those in need and less fortunate than him. I would feel I succeeded as a mother if he becomes that person.
