Of monsters and imaginary things

One of my son’s “monster” drawings

My 4 year old son has a vivid imagination like any little boy his age and sometimes he even manages to scare himself by imaginary creatures. I was trying to convince him that the character he calls “kuku” which scares him sometimes can’t really hurt him, because she’s just in his imagination. I asked him to name five things which are real. He replied:

  • lion
  • rat that lives in the fields
  • mother
  • TV
  • wolf

Then I asked him to name five imaginary things. To which he said:

  • Barney
  • cheetah that wears clothes
  • kuku
  • brown zebra (He said because real zebras have black and white stripes)
  • cow that jumps over the moon

“That’s exactly right! And can these imaginary things eat chicken drumsticks?” “No” he replied with a big smile.

“And can they shake your hand?” “No!”

“Then how can they hurt you?” He pondered at this for a while and replied,

“OK, but can you please make the kuku go away?”

After having Mama banish the kuku, he is now sleeping peacefully. Tomorrow he’ll get up and tell me about his dreams and which one he liked, and which one he didn’t. I love it that he lets me in his imaginary world and I can’t wait to see him soar on his imagination and creativity when he grows older.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Street Life

When I visited San Francisco with my husband many years ago, I had the chance to photograph Lombard Street; its 8 sharp turns have made it known as the crookedest street in the world. We walked up the street as cars zigzagged by and we wondered how difficult it must be for someone who would have to commute by here daily. Apparently it was designed this way to negotiate the steep incline of the hill.

Hanging Sleepers

I’m the kind of sleeper who even manages to sleep when hanging from one edge of the bed because her 4-year old decided to claim the bed in the middle of the night.

These days I’m sleeping late because I’m working on some freelance writing and I have a project to complete. Once I’m in bed I drop off to sleep quickly, but I’m a light sleeper generally. Sometimes I’m really tired and I don’t even notice when the little fellow slips into my bed but at other times I wake up when he comes. It’s a very funny sight to watch since he’s half asleep and literally drops into my bed.

I know I should actually be putting him back in his bed when he does that but instead I just kiss him and go back to sleep. It’s amazing how little space I need to sleep and how much the little rascal needs. The best position to sleep in when you’re confined in space is on your back with your arms folded behind your head. That is a strange position to sleep in but I’ve got to optimize my space.

I usually wake up before the alarm rings on school days and at the same time on weekends as well. My son has the same sleeping and waking routine on school days and holidays. I remember the time when before I was married I used to get up late on holidays. I remember, but just barely.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Reflections

I’ve often talked about the lake near my house where I take my afternoon and evening walks. As I walk around this man made lake, I reflect on the day’s happenings, about my son and his future and generally about life. It’s a nice way for me to clear my head and I always go home refreshed and more hopeful. For this challenge I am posting photos of this lake that I have taken at different times during my stay in Dubai.

Friday Fictioneers: Violation

old-building-staircase“I don’t have any change. I’ll get it from the shops downstairs.”

The man took the 1000 rupee note and looked around the apartment, his eyes settling on Shanti playing with her dolls.

“Shanti go with him.”

As the two entered the elevator, the man pressed 15, the topmost floor in the building. Shanti sensed something was wrong and she was just about to say something when the man placed his hand over her mouth. The next few minutes of terror shattered her life forever.

When Shanti came back trembling and bruised, her mother knew she had made the biggest mistake of her life.

This story has been written for the Friday Fictioneers and is based on a news item I read recently. For more details about the challenge see the link below.

Weekly Writing Challenge: Power of Names

I was named Zainab by my father and although it very appropriately means “a father’s precious jewel” or “the one who glorifies a father” in Arabic, I was given this name more for it’s historical significance and it’s popularity among Muslims. The daughter of the Holy Prophet Mohammad (Peace be upon him) was named Zainab as well as one of his granddaughters. Another meaning of Zainab is “blossoming flower” or “fragrant flower”.

My father went a step further and also kept a nickname for me and for each of his three children. To this day, many of our relatives know us by our nicknames and not our real names. It’s a shame really because I love my name. I couldn’t think of any other name that would suit me better.

When I got married I didn’t change my surname to reflect my husband’s name because we thought it was too much hassle to change bank accounts and other records. My husband didn’t have any hangups that his wife should adopt his name so I just kept my maiden name. This is something a bit strange in my country where married women are addressed as Mrs. XYZ and not Ms.  Many times I get called Mrs Javid which is my mother’s name (she did change her maiden name to my father’s surname) because they think my husband must be called Javid and they can’t understand why I didn’t change my name. For some women it’s a matter of honor to be associated with their husband’s name. For me it just shows that I am an independent woman with my own identity and don’t need to change the name I was born with.

I think names are very important and should be kept with the meaning in mind. When I named my son “Nadir” which means exceptional in my native Urdu, I had these considerations in mind; that it should have a good meaning, it should be something resembling his father’s name Naseer and it should go well with his surname of Ali. Although I had vowed not to give him a nickname I have ended up calling him Nadoo. When some of his friends from the park where he plays came for his birthday party, they asked me why I had written Nadir on his cake and not Nadoo. When I have to scold him I always address him as Nadir.

Last year I got my son an aquarium with different kinds of fish. They were about 10 of them and mostly in pairs. My son named them after all his relatives. Then one by one they started dying. It was more devastating for me than for my son. Somehow he had not got attached to them maybe because you don’t get to hold fish or feed them directly in their mouth. Anyway I replaced the fish with fewer bigger fish of the same kind and we decided never to name them after someone. They are still doing well today.

Linger a little

My husband and I go out for lunch and a movie every weekend. We always go in the afternoon because I don’t like leaving my son in the evening or at night. I really enjoy this time we have as a couple. The rest of the week my life is focused on my son and my schedule revolves around him.

Sometimes, at the end of the movie, when it’s time to go home I wish I could linger a little longer. Maybe just do a little window shopping. Or have some coffee. But then my guilt takes over and I’m rushing to go home. Even though I know my husband and I deserve to have some time together I still feel bad when I leave my son at home. The poor fellow never makes a fuss about it; he just wants to know if the movie we watched had any monsters in it. Sometimes if I’m feeling especially guilty and I want to reward him for something I buy him a toy before we leave for home.

Every parent knows that caring for a child is no easy task. So when you sometimes get “time off” you just want it to last a bit longer. For me, coming back home after the movie is like coming back to reality.
