A story I wrote for Friday Fictioneers which I think is very relevant to the topic:
Shahzad’s house was the only one left standing on the mountain after the earthquake of 2005. People would come to see it from far away villages and he became known as a holy man.
Shahzad decided to take advantage of his new reputation and began to sell a cure for pains and aches in a small bottle which he would fill with spring water. “No harm done” he would say to himself while pocketing more and more money. Many swore they had been healed by his medicine.
The next year the floods took away his house and Shahzad with it.

Dear Zainab,
A fable that would’ve made Aesop envious. Very nice.
Shalom,
Rochelle
Dear Rochelle,
What a fabulous compliment! Thank you so much! So happy you liked it.
Best wishes,
Zainab
Oh,karma strikes back and how!Poor fellow!Well written Zainab:-)
Thanks.
🙂
The flood giveth and the flood taketh away… Nicely done,
Thank you 🙂
I saw Rochelle’s words, and Aesop popped up in my mind as well… Great take 🙂
Thank you! Today is a happy day 🙂
Nice take on the prompt 🙂
Thank you!
A moral fable and very nicely done.
Thank you.
I wonder if there really wasn’t something holy about his water.
I doubt it. These quacks take advantage of the ignorant all the time.
I find myself agreeing with Rochelle and Bjorn. Well done!
Thank you so much!
Karma’s a bitch! This is a masterful tale, Zainab. You really nailed it this week! When I saw the photo, the first thing I thought of was earthquakes… Love that you went with that, along with the twist at the end.
Thank you so much, am really loving the comments coming in. My story refers to the earthquake of 2005 which occurred in Pakistan in the northern mountainous areas killing 100,000 people. This is the first thing I thought of when I saw the photo.
“No harm done” the flood waters probably announced as they wiped away his base of deception.
They had been watching him to see what he would do with the chance he got. When they saw him sell his soul to the devil they prepared to advance.
I like this! It makes me wonder who’s telling us about the “wise” man and what kind of lesson it served for the narrator.
Maybe it’s the one who sent the earthquake and the flood or maybe just another person in his village.
Thanks for reading.
Vengeance, or just deserts. One wonders how the neighbours felt about it though.
You’re right the neighbors couldn’t have liked it 🙂 Thanks for reading!
Greed. Nice moral of the story kind of story.
Greed, manipulation and deceit. Thanks for reading.
Karmic justice. Perhaps Shahzad should have second guessed himself.
Isn’t it typical of man to try to manipulate at the slightest given opportunity?
Thank you for reading.
Lovely pay-off. I enjoyed tvis
Thank you!
Very good twist. I liked the way you wove it all together.
Yes, I am a week behind. I did post my entry to this prompt today.
I hope you will check it out.
Scott
Thank you for liking it. 🙂
This is one of my favorites by you.
Really? Thank you!
I really liked this. Shahzad really deserved what he got!
He sure did. Thank you for your comment.
Ah! Magic water. Don’t fool with it. Lovely little story. There’s a lot of people out there who should be reading this!
People even sell cures for cancer like this. They really need to be stopped.
Thanks for reading.
I love how the flood came back around almost nonchalantly, as if to finish up the job from before…. “no harm done.”
The flood was just waiting to see what he would do with the chance he was given. He was a fool not to realize that.
Thanks for reading.
It appears the best thing for me to say would be “Ditto.” Excellent tale, Zainab.
janet
Thank you Janet!
i love how the water washed this world clean of his filth 🙂 a great read
Thank you!
Well, that would be a perfect example of how karma will truly bite you in the butt. Nice use of symbolism with the water. A great read! Here’s mine: http://theforgottenwife.com/2014/01/23/friday-fictioneers-the-bride/
Hi there! Thanks for reading. Just read yours, welcome back!
Thank you! I’m glad to be back 🙂 And thank you for your lovely comment on my piece!
it was karma that did him in.
God is watching.
A charming and not unrealistic story…with a very satisfying ending!
Glad you liked it 🙂

So indeed the local waters were a cure for pains ( in the … ) and aches then? 🙂 Tay.
Yes indeed such pains can only be washed away 🙂
Excellent piece – thanks for the good read! Nan
Thank you!
Makes you see there’s a sense of justice in this world, huh? Nice story!
There’s a saying in my language which translates to Justice may be late in coming but it’s not not blind.
Thanks for reading!
That there was his Karma. good one Zainab.
Thank you!
