When my son was a baby we moved into a house with an open kitchen which was quite a nuisance as we had to keep watching him not to stray into the kitchen area.
One day I had to rush upstairs for something and when I came back I found him sitting in a heap of potatoes and onions, a mixing bowl on his head and a scissor in one hand.
“Mama!” he said, with the widest smile.
From that day on, we had the kitchen fenced off and a gate fixed on the side. Much to my son’s disappointment the gate was always kept closed.

Dear Zainab,
I have a sense that this is a memoir. 😉 I smiled as I pictured it, only with my own sons. Nice one.
shalom,
Rochelle
Well the fence is there, but of course I exaggerated it a bit. Thanks for reading and coming up with another great prompt! Best wishes, Zainab
Neat piece of writing, all the angst of parenthood in 100 words.
With an open kitchen and a baby crawling around, anything can happen. Thankfully no harm done. 🙂
Tough on the kid yes but tougher for the mom am sure:-)A sweet piece on the tensions of being a mom
You can not take your eyes off of them for a second!
Yes the trouble they get themselves into. My son is now 4 and I can’t leave his hand because he loves running off.
A curious kid. But at least he didn’t go far. Good story.
Yes all’s well that ends well. Thanks for reading.
We came home early and the babysitter was watching movies with the other kids. Our 1 year old had a butcher knife and was stabbing the carpet between his legs. Glad yours turned out well too. Good writing! Thanks!
Wow that must have been terrifying for you. The troubles these little ones get themselves into.
Thanks for reading.
Fascinating that this landscape took you to the kitchen! The efforts to keep kids from harm, never end. :-p
Haha, I guess the fence was on my mind. Thanks for reading.
It’s hard to make it safe in a kitchen… but I guess it was not the potatoes that was the concern
Nope there are terrible evils that lurk in the kitchen. Strictly out of bounds now.
You’re a great mom…and writer!
Aww thanks! 🙂
You’ve got to keep them safe. But did he ever learn to cook?
Haha, he’s getting there! Can’t keep a future chef out of the kitchen!
Focusing on the fence and the openness. Good take on the prompt.
Thank you, but you’re a week behind. Have you read the latest: https://zainabjavid.wordpress.com/2014/01/22/friday-fictioneers-vengeance/
